TRANS-LINGUISTICA VIII. Applied Linguistics and Sociocultural Perspectives
29 July 2026

The Department of Applied Linguistics at the Faculty of Technical and Human Sciences, Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania, the Regional Committee in Cluj of the MTA, the Committee on Linguistics, and the DAMERG Research Center announce the eighth edition of the international scientific conference TRANS-LINGUISTICA VIII: Applied Linguistics and Sociocultural Perspectives to be held on November 12–13, 2026.

The central task of applied linguistics as an academic discipline is to explore linguistic practices and their complex dimensions, which, in the age of artificial intelligence, has broadened the range of challenges facing the field. Areas worthy of exploration include the growing role of technology in applied linguistics research, the new dynamics arising from globalization, interdisciplinary approaches, the connections between linguistic interactions and identity (Bucholtz–Hall 2005), language learning and acquisition, issues of bilingual and multilingual education, trends in digital communication, shifts in social and cultural relationships, understanding new linguistic environments, and new methodological approaches.

In the spirit of the principles of interdisciplinarity, usefulness, and innovation (Szépe, cited in Dobos 2023), our conference aims to provide an academic forum for presenting new findings in applied linguistic research, with particular emphasis on their sociocultural dimensions. The academic community also needs renewal; therefore, we place special emphasis on the research findings of young researchers, including those in undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs.
